It’s damn close.

Passed close enough that I could feel the “aerodynamic tug” (for lack of a better term) at about the same strength as when a semi goes the other way on a two lane highway.

Now having a narrow vehicle isn’t just fun, it’s cheap. If I’d had even a Golf instead, I’d be looking at some expensive repairs.

Also, a reminder to check your mirrors. I saw a large red thing coming up fast in the rearview and started edging towards the shoulder.

I swear my car has some sort of intermittent magnetism on the side panels, because this happens to me ALL the time, and it terrifies me every time.

I’ll see cars that have been maintaining a perfect line for miles, but as soon as they approach me to pass, or I approach them to pass, they start veering towards me. It’s half the reason I try to stay in the left lane most of the time: so I have somewhere to go when it inevitably happens again.

The worst time was when I was overtaking a semi-truck. I was in the left lane and he was in the middle lane. I’d gotten to the back corner of his trailer, which is admittedly a blind spot for him. He started transitioning to my lane, so I laid off the gas and tapped my horn to let him know I was there. I also edged to the left side of my lane. He jerked himself back into his lane, so I kept going, trying to finish my pass. Then, when I’m about halfway up the length of his trailer, he decides to switch into my lane anyway! At this point, he totally knew I was there! I honked again, and he still kept coming. He got completely into the lane, not caring that I was literally right there. I had to go completely into the shoulder to avoid being crushed. Slammed on the gas and put as much distance between myself and that crazy asshole as I could.

I don’t blame truckers for occasionally missing people beside them. It’d be a miracle if they didn’t. And most of them react pretty quick and move back, thankfully. But to see you there, move out of the way and then jump in again... either dumb as a stump or popping little white pills for too long.

Also you reminded me of this guy. Hate to see him with a 53-footer behind...

Had that happen to me in the Lada once. On an overpass with almost no shoulder. B-train loaded with pipe, and I was around the middle of the first trailer. No way to accelerate out of it at 55 mph with less than 80 hp, so all I could do was get over as far as possible, lay on the horn, and hope for the best. Fortunately it only managed to take off my mirror and leave some crazy tire rubs down the side, a shredded front left tire, and miraculously I managed to keep out of the concrete barrier, by maybe an inch... Bastard didn’t even stop.

It was two and a half years ago, and I still have trouble passing big rigs.

The other night I was driving on an arterial street, one wide lane in each direction, when a CR-V passed me on the right. I edged toward the double yellow and laid on my horn for 2-3 seconds as she passed, then flashed my high beams a few times to make sure she got the message. People be crazy.
